Blood, violence and capturing passion. Is it possible to combine these harsh features, despite of their hue, into a beautiful movie experience? Nagisa Oshima, a Japanese director succeeded in this in the 1970´s, in spite of the censorship and evil talk. His two fascinating movies, In the Realm of Senses (Ai no Corrida) and Empire of Passion (Ai no Borei) finally ended up conveniently between the same cases of a dvd box.

Elokuvapaketin kanteen tekstailtu "Molemmat kielletyt mestariteokset" sekä takaosan julistukset etenkin Aistien valtakunnan sensuurihakuisesta erotiikan kuvauksesta herättivät mielenkiintoni ja boksi päätyi lopulta osaksi omaa leffakokoelmaa. Vuonna -76 ilmestynyt Aistien valtakunta pokasi Oshimalle mm. Cannesin festivaaleilla parhaan ohjaajan palkinnon. Suitsutuksesta huolimatta elokuva bannattiin tai vähintäänkin sensuroitiin kaikissa suurissa maissa oikeiden seksikohtausten ja kiistellyiden teemojen vuoksi, jotka ohjaaja pääsi filmaamaan verhoiltuaan ensin elokuvan tuotannon japanilais-ranskalaiseksi.
The text on the cover of the case, "Both banned masterpieces" and the declarations on the backside of the case, about the censor-seeking way of depicting eroticism in In the Realm of Senses drew my attention, and the dvd box ended up to be a part of my movie collection. In the Realm of Senses, which came out in 1976, entitled Oshima to receive the Award of the Best Director in the Cannes Film Festival. Despite of the hype, the movie was banned or at least censored in all of the big countries because of the unsimulated sex scenes and the controversial themes, which the director had a chance to film after first disguising the production as a Japanese French production.

Aistien valtakunta perustuu Japania 1930-luvulla vavistaneisiin tositapahtumiin ja se kertoo prostituoidun elämän hylänneestä Sadasta, joka palvelee varakkaassa perheessä kotiapulaisena. Perheen isäntä, salskea ja miehekäs majatalon herra, iskee silmänsä nuoreen naiseen ja ahdistelee tätä siihen pisteeseen, että pariskunnalle kehittyy lopulta salainen ja hyvin intiimi suhde. Isännällä ja Sadalla tuntuu olevan koko elokuvan ajan jos jonkinlaista seksuaalista kokeilunhalua yllä; pari ei tunnu kaihtavan minkäänlaista aktin muotoa, tapahtuipa kanssakäyminen sitten ulkona, kotolla säestäen tai vaikkapa pakottaen kolmas osapuoli kokeiluihin mukaan.
In the Realm of Senses is based on a true story that shook Japan in the 1930´s, it tells a story of Sada, a maid who abandoned her life as a prostitute to serve in a wealthy family. The head of the family, a handsome and manly lord of an inn, caughts his eye on the young woman and harrasses her until they come to a point where they finally have to develope a secret and a very intimate relationship. Through out the movie the pair seem to have some sort of urge towards all sorts of sexual activities; they are not scared of any type of sex acts wheather it happened outdoors, accompanied with Koto or even forcing a third party to take part in their experiments.

Mikäli Oshima ei kykene katsojaa järkyttämään jo elokuvan alkumetreillä, saa Aistien valtakunnan loppumetrit aikaan omituista ahdistusta parin päätyessä surullisia seurauksia kantaviin kuristusleikkeihin. Kun kaikki on jo koettu, nähty, haistettu ja maistettu, kokee Sada sekä hänen isäntänsä nauttivan parhaiten juuri kirjaimellisesti henkeä salpaavista tunnelmista. Elokuvan loppuratkaisu on häkellyttävän kamala; Sada on lopulta muuttunut kuuliaisesta kotiapulaisesta mustasukkaiseksi seksipedoksi. Lopputekstien pärähtäessä ruutuun olo on ahdistunut ja raadollinen, mikä ei suinkaan ole Aistien valtakunnan tapauksessa huono asia.
If Oshima fails to disturb the watcher in the early part, the final parts of the In the Realm of Senses create odd anxiety as the couple ends up having strangle games with sad consequences. When all is experienced, seen, smelled and tasted, Sada and her master realise enjoying the best when their breath is taken away, literally. The ending of the movie is surprisingly awful; Sada has changed from an obedient maid into a jealous sex beast. As the credits roll you feel yourself anxious and sinful, which is not a bad thing in the case of the In the Realm of Senses.

Kultaisen palmun ansainnut Intohimon valtakunta (1978) on edeltäjäänsä lempeämpi elokuva, jossa käsitellään nuoren miehen ja tätä 26 vuotta vanhemman kotirouvan kiellettyä suhdetta. Aistien valtakunnan tapaan siinä on runsaasti häiritsevän intiimejä kohtauksia, mutta tällä kertaa ohjaaja on ollut pidättyväisempi ja armollisempi, mikä tekee kokonaisuudesta huomattavasti esteettisemmän ja rauhallisemman. Länsimainen katsoja pääsee kurkistamaan tavallisen, köyhyysrajalla elävän perheen mökkiin, jossa himo on hiipunut ja elämä tallaa valmiiksi ajettua polkua.
Empire of Passion (1978), which won a Golden Palm, is more lenient movie than its predecessor and it tells a story of a forbidden relationship between a young man and an old housewife who is 26 years older than him. Just like In the Realm of Senses, the movie has plenty of disturbingly intimate scenes but this time the director has been more reserved and merciful, which makes the whole much more aesthetic and calm. A Western person has a chance to peek inside the house of a normal and poor family where the heat has died down and life goes on on a ready-made track.

Seki-chanin sekä hänen perheensä elämä rikkoutuu nuoren Toyojin toimesta; miekkonen on iskenyt silmänsä emäntään ja vierailee tämän luona ahkerasti. Lopulta heidän välilleen kehkeytyy intohimoinen suhde, joka on luonnollisesti salattava kaikilta. Toyojin ehdotuksesta he päättävät murhata Sekin aviomiehen ja käyvät viimein tuumasta toimeen. Kun rikshakuskin onneton ruumis viimein lojuu hylätyssä kaivossa korkealla vuorilla, voi pariskunta viimein hengähtää...kunnes uteliaille kyläläisille sekä virkavallalle on keksittävä selitys Sekin aviomiehen mystiselle katoamiselle. Soppa muuttuu yhä sakeammaksi, kun kuollut aviomies päätyy kummittelemaan onnettomalle Sekille.
Seki-Chan´s and her familys life breaks apart because of a young man called Toyoji; the man is in love with the housewife and is visiting her often. Finally a passionate relationship is what they have, and they need to hide it from everyone. Toyoji suggests they murder Seki-Chan´s husband and they proceed with their plan. When the miserable body of the riksha driver rests in an abandoned ancient well high up in the mountainside, they can rest...until they need to create an explanation for the mysterious disappearance of the husband, to hand out to the nosy villagers and a law officer. The plot thickens more when the dead husband appears to haunt poor Seki.

Aistien valtakuntaa sekä Intohimon valtakuntaa yhdistää eroottisesti piinaava tarina, upea, runollinen kerronta sekä traaginen loppuratkaisu. Siinä missä Aistien valtakunta on visuaalisesti hyvin kaunis, paikataan tätä ominaisuutta Intohimon valtakunnassa tunnelmalla ja mielenkiintoisella kummitustarinalla. Molemmat elokuvat ovat katsomisen arvoisia, erityisesti erilaisen erotiikkaelämyksen nälkäiselle. Kyseinen leffapaketti löytynee edullisesti esimerkiksi nettikaupoista tai Top Tenin -hyllyiltä, mutta eipä ole mahdottomuuskaan törmätä tapaukseen kattavasta antikvariaatista.
A tormenting story, gorgeous, poetic directing and a tragic end are what unites both In the Realm of Senses and Empire of Passion. Where as In the Realm of Passion is visually very beautiful, this quality is patched with a great atmosphere and an interesting horror story in the latter movie. Both of the movies are worth watching, they are especially for anyone with an appetite for different erotic experiences. The dvd box can be found for fair price from f.e. the online stores or from the shelves of Top Ten, and it is not an impossibility to encounter it at a good antiquarian bookshop.
